Inspired by Of Literature and Locations over at the Perpetual Page-Turner, Book Voyage combines my want to travel and my love of books. Join me as I venture around the world!
With the unveiling of a snazzy new feature today, I will be showcasing an equally snazzy (perhaps even more) city that I have seen quite a bit of in books I've read in the past. I'm talking about New York City, guys.
There's something inexplicably magical about the city that never sleeps and well, I think it's best to let Jay-Z take this one:
In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made, oh
There's nothing you can't do, now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you, let's hear it for New York
New York, New York
I honestly don't think I could have said it better. But back to the magic - that is the reason behind why I've always wanted to visit New York City. I've always wanted to feel that magic myself. And while that's going to be a looonnng time from now - at least until I finish high school which is in four years! - I'm thankful I, at the very least, still have books and the Internet.
1. Visit Times Square at night. I mean, this place is iconic! And what could be better than witnessing it at night?
2. See a show on Broadway. I'm not a giant theatre nerd but Broadway is a must.
3. Visit FAO Schwarz. Because everyone knows that some days, you just have to let your inner kid roll.
I live in New Jersey, so NYC is only about an hour's drive away. So it's always been really easy to just do day trips and stuff into the city. But because of how easy it is, I feel like I've never gotten to do any iconic or touristy New York stuff, because it's not really a big deal, I guess. I've been to Times Square, but it was years ago and I don't remember it that well.
ReplyDeleteOh, but I did see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway when I was younger, and it was really cool. Broadway shows are definitely something you have to experience at least once in your life. :)
I hope you do get the opportunity to visit NYC one day! It's a really awesome place. I think I might even live there and/or go to college there one day.
I've been dying to go to a Broadway show for ages and that desire has really fluctuated this year with musicals like Matilda and Annie (I have the vinyl and it's also my namesake so I feel like I should see it at least once live). We do have a lot of productions year-round in Ontario but it's not the same as Broadway!
ReplyDeleteAnd since you live in New Jersey, I just have to ask: Have you ever been to Carlos' Bakery??? I'm seriously obsessed with the show, Cake Boss and I so want to taste some of their stuff.
Thanks for stopping by, Rachel!
I've been to New York a lot, but only to NYC once. It was something else! Unfortunately (or fortunately), we visited probably three days after Hurricane Irene so there were not very many people, but also Broadway had shut down for a few days.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I love that you had From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, but hate that you haven't read it! That was one of my favorite books as a child and I remember reading it over and over again.
I hope you get to go again! I would be devastated if I could only go to NYC once in my life and miss out on Broadway! But the part where there aren't many people sounds like a treat! The mass amount of tourists that go there would probably be the one thing that keeps me away!
ReplyDeleteI tried reading The Mixed Up Files when I was younger but I lost interest and have yet to pick it up again. So that's another book I'm adding to my list of childhood classics I've never read.
Thanks for stopping by, Audrey! :)
